A PhD Built Around the Work You Want to Create
Online Dissertation-Only PhD — PhD by Dissertation

For many experienced professionals, researchers, writers, inventors, and independent thinkers, the traditional doctoral model can feel backward. The student may already know what he or she wants to investigate, create, publish, or contribute—yet conventional doctoral study can require years of prescribed coursework before the student reaches the work that matters most: the dissertation itself.
Blue Marble University takes a different approach. Its Online Dissertation-Only PhD is designed around the production of a substantial original body of work. Instead of making coursework the center of the doctorate, the program makes the candidate’s independent project the center. The normal program is structured around a minimum two-year period of supervised development, with faculty review, planning, progress communication, and final approval.
No conventional academic courses are required as part of the program. When a project calls for particular training, citation review, research methods, formatting instruction, or another specialized preparation, faculty may prescribe suitable supporting work. The purpose is not to add filler—it is to help the candidate produce a work worthy of doctoral recognition.
What Can a “Dissertation” Be?
Blue Marble University uses the word dissertation broadly. The project may be a scholarly research paper, but it does not have to be limited to the conventional academic manuscript. The University’s program page gives examples that include a work of history, an archaeological discovery, a novel, film, video, musical work, photographic journal, an innovative use of technology, 3D modeling or virtual-world work, robotics, or a substantial review of medical technology. The common requirement is not the format. It is the quality and significance of the work.
The University looks for two central qualities: the work must be original and substantial, and it should represent an accomplishment that both the student and the University can be proud to present. Publication, circulation, dissemination, or other meaningful presentation of the completed work is given considerable weight. The goal is a doctoral project that exists in the world as a real intellectual or creative contribution—not merely a paper that disappears into an archive.
How the Two-Year Process Works
The process begins before enrollment with a proposed project. The applicant submits the normal graduate application and the required Dissertation-Only PhD supplement. Faculty review the applicant’s background, demonstrated skills, proposed subject, and the feasibility of the project. There is no fixed list of academic prerequisites, because the University focuses heavily on whether the applicant has the ability to complete the work proposed. That means the burden is on the applicant to show sufficient writing, communication, research, technical, artistic, or presentation skills for the particular project.
After enrollment, the first three to five months are generally devoted to formal planning: refining the project, settling procedures, identifying problems, and planning for publication or dissemination. The candidate then carries the work forward with faculty mentorship. There are no scheduled classes and no fixed daily reporting schedule. Candidates work on their own time, while communicating progress to the faculty mentor, submitting progress reports and work samples when requested.
A program designed for independent adults
This format is particularly attractive to self-directed candidates who do not need a classroom to stay motivated. The schedule is flexible, but the academic expectation is not casual: the project must be approved, developed under faculty oversight, brought to completion, and judged worthy of the PhD.
Affordable Enough to Pursue Without a Student Loan
Cost is one of the most striking differences between Blue Marble University and many conventional doctoral programs. The published tuition for the Dissertation-Only PhD is $3,750 USD per year with the payment plan, or $3,400 USD per year when paid in advance as a lump sum. There is no application fee. Additional annual tuition may be required when a project extends beyond the expected period and continuing faculty guidance is needed.
The University’s philosophy is straightforward: advanced education should not require a student to assume a life-changing debt burden. A doctoral candidate should be able to invest primarily in the work, not in financing the institution that supervises it.
AI as a Research Tool—With Faculty Guidance
Beginning February 6, 2026, Blue Marble University requires the use of artificial intelligence tools in dissertations and Independent Study papers, with guidance from the thesis advisor. The objective is not to replace scholarship or authorship. It is to train modern scholars to use contemporary research and writing tools intelligently while preserving responsibility for the accuracy, originality, judgment, and final quality of their own work.
Your Work Remains Your Work
Independent work created by the student remains the student’s intellectual property and may be published or used by the student. The University receives a continuing right to use the work for non-commercial purposes, such as presenting examples of student scholarship and achievement. Upon successful completion and faculty approval, the University issues the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Arts and Sciences, specifying the candidate’s field of endeavor, together with an academic record describing the independent work undertaken.
Blue Marble University has also added a new institutional quality-assurance milestone: the University is internationally institutionally accredited by QAHE, the International Association for Quality Assurance in Pre-Tertiary & Higher Education. That institutional accreditation is separate from professional licensure and from the acceptance policies of any particular employer or receiving university, but it adds an independent quality-assurance review to the University’s international model.
