Among the many career possibilities are:

Claims Adjuster. As employees of insurance companies, claims adjusters will principally benefit from the broad understanding of contracts and torts that they receive as part of their legal studies degree. Claims adjusters evaluate claims made to insurance companies, inspect property damage (or other documentation of a claim), and make decisions about how much the insurance company will pay on each claim. Entry-level jobs involve simple claim decisions, such as deciding on payouts based on diagnostic codes. More senior positions involve inspection, analysis, and decision-making on major claims, such as building fires or damages resulting from natural disasters.

Zoning Inspector. Work with the permitting process, inspecting projects, issuing permits.

Probation Officer. Other graduates with a legal studies degree might choose to work as probation officers, parole officers, or in other roles in the corrections field.

Social Worker. Program NOT designed for licensing as a social worker, but for work for governmental agencies at the state or local level, others work at hospitals, charities, mental health clinics, non-profit organizations, or rehabilitation centers.

Government Employee. Working for the government can include a wide range of federal, state, and local government positions, mostly involving regulations.

Litigation Support Professional. The term litigation support professional includes a wide range of professions ranging from e-discovery specialists who assist lawyers during the discovery process, litigation paralegals, trial and jury consultants, court reports, as well as expert witnesses from various backgrounds, including medical and legal experts. All of these litigation support professionals are essential to help attorneys at various stages of a civil case.

Tax Preparer. Operate your own tax preparation service.

Company Organization and Business Operations. Engage in business start-ups, and assist managing companies and employees.

Bookkeeping: Operate a bookkeeping business.

Real Estate Agent. Real estate agents facilitate the purchase and sale of real estate including residential, commercial, and undeveloped properties. While you don’t need to obtain a degree in order to become a realtor, a legal studies degree does prepare real estate agents for contract negotiations and execution, analysis of zoning laws and other local regulations, as well as for more esoteric issues, such as property line disputes and fraudulent omissions. Having a legal studies degree is especially beneficial for those who want to pursue a specialty like short sales or specific types of commercial property.
